Designing OKX’s first customer-facing GenAI feature

Overview

OKX is a global cryptocurrency exchange with advanced financial services. In 2024, OKX launched Market Briefing, an AI-powered market news and highlights feature
designed to keep next-gen investors
informed and engaged.

Role
As the Content Design Lead, I partnered with product, engineering, design, and legal stakeholders for this quick turnaround project. My responsibilities included:

  • Feature and label naming

  • Designing the IA

  • Training the LLM

  • Design reviews with cross-functional leaders

  • Legal and compliance reviews

  • Localization reviews

Challenge

Unlike humans, GenAI lacks a strong point of view and taste.

[explain why you need to train llm]

Goal

Build a news feature within the OKX app to help users make informed decisions, potentially increasing trading volume.

Solution

Since this is something content designers would update manually, we’ll automate it using generative AI. This AI-powered news feature will highlight market news to keep next-gen investors
informed and engaged. This new feature highlights three crypto news and summarizes the content into bite-sized stories.

Process

First, I prompted our LLM to summarize any crypto-related news content in 250 or less English characters, and tested it with several stories. Though I’d later apply the same framework and standards that govern all our UX content, this benchmark experiment helped me understand in what areas our LLM would need training.

Before we trained our LLM

For example:

  1. We wanted to avoid academic-sounding tone in the opening: “The article discusses the upcoming launch of Unichain…” This would need to be addressed.

  2. It also tended to oversimplify the content, stripping it of relevant detail that made the article interesting: “The piece also emphasizes the importance of community involvement…” In this example, that sentence would strike our readers as a gross oversimplification of decentralization.

Style and readability

1. Tone

Write in a conversational tone and in an active voice. Don’t rephrase the prompt or use academic openers like, “This article discusses...”

2. Clarity

Write at a 7th grade reading level. Do not simply repeat the headline.

3. Brevity

Summarize in 2-3 short sentences. We initially gave it a character limit, but it would ignore it, so we had to double down.

Relevance and objectivity

4. Storytelling

State the single most important idea first. Then provide relevant supporting points in the following sentences.

5. Oversimplification

Be specific about key details and avoid oversimplifying. Aim for clarity so readers can understand the nuances.

6. Accuracy

Do not reference material, create implications, or state outcomes unless they're specifically mentioned in the article. In other words, do not hallucinate information.

Uniswap is launching Unichain, a Layer 2 network for DeFi and NFTs, in November 2024. Unichain will offer near-instant transactions and easy cross-chain activities. It will support new and existing projects, including NFTs like Uniswap V3 NFTs. Uniswap is prepared to support NFTs from day one.

Another example

Before:
The price analysis for October 11 evaluates key cryptocurrencies, including BTC, ETH, BNB, SOL, XRP, DOGE, TON, ADA, AVAX, and SHIB. It discusses market trends, potential support and resistance levels, and provides insights into each asset's performance amid current market conditions.

After:

Bitcoin and altcoins made a strong comeback on Oct. 11, indicating solid buying at lower levels. BTC recovered sharply and is nearing $62,500. Analysts are divided on BTC's next move, with predictions ranging from $100,000 to below $50,000. BTC whales have accumulated 1.5 million BTC in the past six months. ETH, BNB, SOL, XRP, DOGE, TON, ADA, AVAX, and SHIB also showed signs of recovery, with potential for further gains if key resistance levels are breached.
